What Are Cannabinoids? THC, CBD, and Beyond

The cannabis plant contains over 100 different chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. But what are cannabinoids and what do they do? Cannabinoids are responsible for the relief that users report from common symptoms, including pain, inflammation, nausea, and anxiety. Cannabinoids work by imitating naturally-occurring chemicals in the human body’s endocannabinoid system. These chemicals are involved in regulating appetite, pain, memory, and movement. When cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system, they activate to promote internal stability and health.

Here is a brief explanation of some popular cannabinoids and what they can do.

    • THC: Responsible for a euphoric high. Effects differ from strain to strain.
    • CBD: Research suggests CBD can help manage symptoms and conditions including seizure disorders, anxiety, Multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, and opioid withdrawal.
    • CBG: Early research suggests CBG may inhibit the growth of cancer cells.and reduce intraocular pressure (glaucoma).
    • CBN: When cannabis ages, THC breaks down and becomes CBN. Observations suggest CBN may have sedative, anti-seizure, and anti-inflammatory properties.
