Do I Still Need a Doctor's Recommendation?
California led the way in legalizing marijuana for medical use in 1996. Under California law, those who meet specific requirements can purchase and consume marijuana legally with a doctor’s recommendation. However, recreational use has also been legalized in California with the passage of Prop 64. This means you no longer need a physician’s recommendation to obtain cannabis as long as you are 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID.
After the passage of Prop 64, many medical cannabis patients stopped renewing their recommendations. This is because they could access the same cannabis as before without the time and expense of obtaining a recommendation. Retailers estimate that between 70% to 80% of their customers are medical cannabis patients who have not renewed their doctor’s recommendations.
